CIRCLE TIME: The children are divided into two groups. A teacher leads each “circle” with the assistance of another teacher. Together they practice communication/social skills, count, sort, classify, have group discussions, learn about letters and sounds, sing, dance, use rhythm instruments and do creative movement exercises.

CLEAN-UP TIME: All children are expected to participate in cleaning up the toys and materials used throughout the day. Teachers supervise and children work cooperatively.

OUTDOOR PLAY:  Large muscle development is encouraged by daily outdoor play, year round. Activities include throwing and catching, gardening, chalking, pumping swings, sandbox, pedaling bikes, running, climbing and sliding.  Most of outdoor play is self-directed, but there are times when a teacher may bring a small group outside to participate in a teacher-directed activity.

Our daily routine incorporates all of the State Guidelines for Early Childhood Education which are based on the Frameworks required in the Elementary and Secondary Schools. The children experience a combination of teacher-directed and self-directed activities including:

ARRIVAL/DISCOVERY LEARNING: A variety of learning centers are set up daily.  Play includes both structured teacher-led and self directed activities and includes use of all classroom materials.

MEETING TIME: All children meet briefly with the teachers for announcements or to acknowledge any special celebrations.

READINESS GROUP TIME: 4 and 5 year old children meet in small groups to work on Kindergarten readiness skills as indicated in the State Frameworks. This is the most structured time of day when a teacher directs the group in listening, writing, sorting,  counting, sequencing, patterning and learning skills across the disciplines. 


PRESCHOOL STORY TIME:  3 year old children meet as a small group to listen to a read aloud story. While listening to the story, children learn to keep their bodies and voices under control; sitting still and respecting the personal space of others. A literary discussion follows encouraging good observational, listening and communication skills. Children learn the give and take of conversation; practicing both self expression and self control. Discussions revolve around the author, illustrator and content of the story and illustrations.

SNACK TIME: Children decide individually when to come to the snack table during Discovery Learning time. After washing their hands, they get their own cup and napkin and sit with 8 other children and a teacher. Before sitting down, the children locate their name and "check in" for snack. This early reading skill also lets the teacher know who has had snack. When leaving the snack area the children clean up after themselves.
